Simplifying Oracle Backup and Restore with Veeam

May 2, 2018

Your Challenges

  • You have one-off backup solutions for your Oracle database(s) and potentially different databases have different solutions and are manually maintained;

  • Responsibility of different databases spans multiple people and this results in different designs and capabilities for protection, backup and restore;

  • You are not 100% sure that the backups are completed successfully and

    • the backups are application-consistent,

    • the logs are deleted upon a successful backup, and

    • that granular recovery is possible;

  • You do not have any offsite backups to ensure business continuity;

  • You have complexity but desire simplicity;

  • You don't have a dedicated Oracle Database Administrator (DBA), instead your Oracle Developer or SQL Server DBA performs this role; or

  • You lack Oracle expertise or your Oracle resource(s) are stretched.

Oracle Database Administrators are expensive

We should know, we employ them! Using Veeam, you don’t have to be an expert in Oracle to implement robust protection and restore capabilities. Whether you are running Oracle on Linux or Windows, Veeam makes transactionally consistent backups of Oracle databases by automatically putting databases in hot backup mode using one of the methods provided by Oracle, before taking an image-level backup.

Without Veeam, restoring an Oracle database from an image-level backup was a tedious process that required specific expertise and experience with the corresponding toolset — which took significant amount of time thus impacting RTOs. Now, anyone can do the same with just a few clicks using Veeam Explorer for Oracle — even with zero Oracle expertise.

Introducing Veeam Explorer for Oracle (VEO)
VEO allows you to work with either Virtual Machine Snapshots or actual database backups. As the name suggests, VEO allows you to explore your snapshots and backups like you would using a file explorer on your PC. It does not matter what operating system or hypervisor is used including Oracle's OVM.

For database-level recovery, you do not need to fully restore and start the virtual machine hosting your Oracle server. Instead, you can use Veeam recovery capabilities to mount the selected restore point of Oracle server VM to Veeam backup server and then specify how you want your database to be restored.

We won't bore you to tears with the details, but there is a significant amount of capability in the VEO solution that results in you having strong protection of what is likely to be a mission critical system in your organisation. The whole point of VEO is not to be a technical expert in Oracle databases, what we want to address is the outcomes that this excellent solution can bring to your organisation.

Key Takeaways

  • Implement a data protection regime that is common across all your database solutions - not just RMAN for Oracle

  • Move your database protection to a policy based consistent process rather than a reactive behaviour based process that is inconsistent

  • Decrease your risks of data loss without having to increase your Oracle skills

  • Maintain a set of virtual machine snapshots as well as database backups

  • Use the full power of the Veeam Suite across different technologies and have offsite copies for full business continuity capability

Talk to us about how you protect your Oracle investments and together we can deliver a solution that deivers key outcomes for your organisation with all your Oracle and other technologies across your data centres.
